Marcin Kilarski is an associate professor at the Faculty of English at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. His research interests include linguistic typology and the history of linguistics. He is the author of two monographs, i.e.,Nominal classification: A history of its study from the classical period to the present(John Benjamins, 2013) andA history of the study of the Indigenous languages of North America(John Benjamins, 2021), and editor ofNominal classification in Asia and Oceania: Functional and diachronic perspectives(with Marc Allassonnière-Tang) (John Benjamins, 2023). In the years 2020-2021, he was President of the North American Association for the History of the Language Sciences; since 2024 he has been a member of Agder Vitenskapsakademi (Kristiansand).

讲座内容简介：

In this talk we will look at some of the typical features of languages indigenous to North America, focusing on their sound systems and grammar. Examples will be drawn mainly from Iroquoian languages of the Northeast and Southeast, and Salish languages of the Pacific Northwest. Studying these languages thus provides us with insights about the remarkable differences among languages and the reasons behind them which lie in the history of interactions among speakers.
